The conference »Nuclear Energy for New Europe« is meant to address the prospects and the future of the nuclear energy in the world faced with the – now already very expressed - threat of the global warming. The conference evolved from annual conferences of Nuclear Society of Slovenia, which was first held in the alpine resort Bovec in 1992. This year the jubilee 15th conference was held and it was attended by 138 participants from 20 countries. The technical part of the program was complemented with a visit to Institute »Jožef Stefan« TRIGA reactor which in 2006 celebrated forty years of operation.

The editorial activities of this year's Proceedings started already in January 2006 with a Call for Papers. By May, 149 abstracts were submitted. A Program Committee meeting was held in June in Ljubljana, where the program of the conference was agreed and the selection of papers was made for oral or poster presentation. There were 6 invited lectures that covered wide range of topics from new generation reactors to fusion related problems. A memorial section to honor the work of our late colleague prof. dr. Radomir Ilič was also held. There were 37 oral presentations divided in 11 sections and there were 51 posters presented during the poster section. After the conference, each paper was reviewed by two referees before being included in the Proceedings.

Traditionally this conference organizes a competition for the best paper prepared by the first author aged no more than 32 years. This year, 14 so called »young authors« participated in the contest and two Awards for Young Authors were presented to:

Egidijus Urbonavicius - Lithuania
Ignalina NPP Confinement Response in Case of Large LOCA and
Failure of Water Injection to RCS
and
Janez Gale - Slovenia
Eight Equation Model for Arbitrary Shaped Pipe Conveying Fluid
(co-authored by Iztok Tiselj).

We also take the opportunity to express our gratitude to all sponsors who contributed to the success of the meeting. We would also like to acknowledge the dedication and hard work of all reviewers, Organization Committee members and reception staff at the venue.
